The Target trials are really only suitable for external symptoms, due to problems of delivery. Also, accurately reporting on the effect of the test preparation requires the participant to see what is going on. For most affected women however, symptoms are external.
The following may be helpful for those women who do suffer from internal HSV symptoms. Even using raw propolis could significantly alleviate symptoms. Ukranian trials using refined propolis gave the numbers below.* There were three groups of 30, of both sexes, and the results are all out of 30.
The scheme for the women was to administer propolis ointment spread onto a tampon four times per day for ten days. The results obtained were impressive: as can be seen from the Table, at Day 10, 24 had healed using propolis, compared to 14 for topical acyclovir and 12 for no treatment (the control group).
Many of the women had concomitant bacterial infections in addition to their HSV symptoms and these were reduced by about 50% in those using propolis. The ointment used contained 3% refined, concentrated propolis. Beeswax and protein were removed during the propolis refining process.
Standard propolis liquid is 50% propolis and 50% propylene glycol. The idea is that a tampon could be used to carry this propolis solution into the vagina. A suitable supplier is:
